The England national football team represents England in association football and is controlled by the Football Association, the governing body for football in England. England is the joint oldest national football team in the world, alongside Scotland, whom they played in the world's first international football match in 1872. Although most national football teams represent a sovereign state, England is one of the United Kingdom's Home Nations, meaning that it is permitted by FIFA statutes to maintain its own national side that competes in all major professional tournaments, with the exception of the Olympic Games. England's home ground is Wembley Stadium in London and their head coach is Fabio Capello.
England are one of eight national teams to have won the FIFA World Cup, which they did in 1966 when they hosted the finals. They defeated West Germany 4–2 in extra time in the final. Since then their best performance at a World Cup was a fourth place finish in 1990. They reached the semi-finals of the UEFA European Championship in 1968 and 1996. They were the most successful of the Home Nations in the British Home Championship with 54 wins (including 20 shared wins) before the competition was suspended in 1984.
The traditional rival of England is Scotland; the England and Scotland football rivalry began when they became opponents in the representative matches of the 1870s. As regular fixtures against Scotland came to an end in the late 1980s, rivalries with other national teams have become more prominent. Matches against Argentina and Germany have produced particularly eventful encounters.

LONDON: Manchester United remained two points clear at the top of the English Premier League yesterday as Manchester City moved up into second place in the table. Dimitar Berbatov’s double saw United beat Sunderland 2-0 at Old Trafford while City, who were third on goal difference at the start of the day, won 3-1 at Newcastle in a match where controversial striker Carlos Tevez scored twice.
Tottenham stayed fifth after Rafael van der Vaart scored both goals in a 2-1 win at Aston Villa during a match where they played more than an hour with 10 men after England striker Jermain Defoe was sent-off for elbowing James Collins in an aerial challenge.
Arsenal, who started the weekend in second, and fourth-placed champions Chelsea – now just a point ahead of Spurs – will look to maintain their title challenges when they meet at the Emirates Stadium on Monday.
United were ahead as early as the fifth minute when Ryan Giggs’s run saw him find Wayne Rooney, whose cross was headed in by the unmarked Berbatov at the far post.
United had several chances to double their lead before Bulgaria striker Berbatov made it 2-0 in the 57th minute when his shot delected off Sunderland’s Anton Ferdinand — brother of United’s Rio.
“Dimitar could have scored four or five today,” United manager Sir Alex Ferguson said of his striker, who now has 13 league goals this season. “He had some terrific opportunities.”
United are the only unbeaten team in the league with 10 wins and seven draws and Ferguson added: “We are getting that consistency, particularly in our defending. These are good signs for us.”

Now that Everton have finished 8th in the Premier League and will not be playing Europa League football next season I can comment, without accusations of bias, on the decision to prevent Portsmouth from being allowed to compete in Europe despite reaching the Cup Final. The decision means that whoever finishes 7th in the Premier League will take that Europa spot instead of the South Coast club and I have to applaud the FA’s decision on that front.

I’ve got nothing against Portsmouth, despite previous posts to this website where I’ve suggested that it would be good for them to be relegated (so as to relieve themselves of the mercenary remnants of Redknapp’s reign and start over). But as a club, I’m ambivalent towards Portsmouth, I certainly don’t want them to go bust but I shan’t miss watching them play. I’m also full of admiration for the job that Avram Grant has done since taking over, but despite his dignified slowing of their inevitable free fall, they don’t deserve a European adventure next season.

Check out new screens from NCAA Football 2011.  This set of screens shows Alabama and Texas squaring off; running, throwing catching, etc.  Also, we’ve got Tim Tebow in the PS3 and Xbox 360 box art.  NCAA Football 2011 is set to hit stores on July 13th.
EA Sports released information on the major changes for this year’s version of NCAA Football.  The theme of the changes this year definitely seems to be visual, as you can see from the screenshot.  Most years, the NCAA tends to lack the “aesthetic appeal” of Madden and other EA Sports titles, but that screenshot implies that 2011 will be different.  The statement said that the team is focusing on attention to detail, adding dynamic helmet numbers and other player uniform variations, making refs that jump out of the way to avoid running into players, etc.
